BP ultimate wants you!

The BP ultimate frisbee team, a club team, is looking for players to come and play and have a good time.

For those who don’t know what ultimate frisbee is, it’s a lot like Texas football in the way that you are only able to throw it; you can’t run with the disc.

Frisbee is played with 7 players on a team and the first team to 15 wins.

Coach and Bethel alumni Zach Murray was willing to talk about frisbee and what it means to him.

When did you start playing?

Murray: I first started playing pickup ultimate a few years before any organized frisbee; however, my first organized game was my senior year at Bethel Park (2009). From there, I went to Pitt-Johnstown and played for 3 years and now I am an active participant in the Pittsburgh Ultimate Community. So I have been playing ultimate for close to 9 years now.

What is the best part of frisbee?

There are too many aspects of frisbee to have a single best part to the game. Here are my Top 3:

    1. The ultimate community is open for anyone to play. There are leagues for men and women, and there are even coed teams. The community is very welcoming and the elite players are usually willing to help.
    2. Ultimate is sort of a cross between soccer and football, while remaining its own sport. Everyone is a QB and a WR, each player is just as important as the other.
    3. The sport is growing faster than any other. There are two professional leagues, the AUDL and MLU. Pittsburgh has a team in the AUDL, the Pittsburgh Thunderbirds.

Why should people play?

Ultimate is a fun, fast, and rewarding game that helps you become not just a better athlete, but a better person.

If you are interested in playing, there is a scrimmage after school Thursday, March 16 at the high school practice fields at 4:30 p.m. for the start of the upcoming season.
