Varsity volleyball reaches playoffs, secures first-round bye

The varsity volleyball started the season off strong, and finished even stronger.

The team finished 12-0 in section play and secured the third seed in the section playoffs.

BP beat Central Catholic, 3-0, but had some trouble in their final sectional game of the season.

In their match against Baldwin, BP lost their first sets in conference play this season, and were tied with Baldwin, 2-all, going into the fifth set. However, BP came back to win and secure the third seed.

BP won the Class AAA Section 1 title by four games over Baldwin. Baldwin finished with an 8-4 record, followed by Upper St. Clair (8-4) and Peters Township (6-5).

BP was the only team in Class AAA with an undefeated conference record.

With the win, BP secured the third seed in Class AAA. Fox Chapel (11-1) and Seneca Valley (11-1) are the first and second seeds, while Plum (10-1) secured the fourth seed. The top seeds secured byes in the first round.

Penn-Trafford (10-2) is the fifth seed, while North Allegheny, who has won eight titles in a row, including a 3-2 win over Bethel Park in 2013 in the finals, is the sixth seed with a 8-4 record.

Norwin (9-3) is the seventh seed, while Butler (6-6) and Upper St. Clair (8-4) are the eighth and ninth seeds respectively. Baldwin (8-4) and Peters Township (6-5) round up the top eleven.

In the first round, Upper St. Clair beat Butler, 3-1, and North Allegheny beat Latrobe also by that score. Penn-Trafford beat Peters TWP, 3-0, and Norwin beat Baldwin, 3-0.

BP will face Penn-Trafford in the quarterfinals of the playoffs on Thursday, May 14 at 7:30 p.m. This will be a very good match. And, even though Penn-Trafford is an underdog, they could scare BP.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children. In addition, in a separate quarterfinal match, Obama Academy and Montour will play at BP at 6 p.m. Admission is included for both games.
