Bawcom leads varsity hockey to lopsided win over Mt. Lebanon

Spencer Bawcom had a hat trick, and the varsity hockey team skated away from Mt. Lebanon, 6-0, in the season finale.

Bawcom opened the scoring in the game at the 4:13 mark in the first period. Here, he screamed a shot past the defense to score. The goal was assisted by Gary Cerrone.

Cerrone added his own goal less than 30 seconds later. Cerrone scored at the 4:38 mark, with Andrew Bello assisting.

Bethel Park started scoring again quickly in the second period. While on a power play after Mt. Lebanon’s Walker Troy was penalized for high sticking, Bawcom was able to secure his second goal. The goal was assisted by Evan Oakley and Tyler Kruszewski.

On another power play with just over 13 minutes left in the period, Ethan Wdowiak joined in with the scoring after a great drive to the net. The goal was assisted by Bryce Evans.

BP’s fifth goal came at the 11:44 mark in the second period after Bello scored a goal. It was assisted by Bawcom and Jack Wagner.

Bawcom finished his hat trick at the 5:37 mark in the third period after a great scoring drive. Bello got his second assist with Bawcom’s goal.

Bawcom had four points on the night, and was also credited with the game winning goal. Bello had three points.

BP had two goalies in front of the net. Josh Finn played the first period after William Lowe III had played every minute in the season’s previous games. Finn had two saves in his only minutes in the regular season. However, Lowe III took over for the second and third periods. He had nine saves and was credited with the win.

Mt. Lebo’s goalie, Joel Kirshner, faced 30 shots and had 24 saves.

Mt. Lebanon was terrible on offense. They only had 11 shots on goal, in which none of them went in. In addition, they were 0 for 4 on the power play. BP was 2 for 3 on the power play.

BP star forward Louie McLinden and equally stellar Mt. Lebanon forward Griffin Nelson were each penalized 12 minutes in the third period for checking from behind and misconduct penalties. Both players did not score in the game.

Mt. Lebanon had a great opportunity in the second period after BP’s Gary Cerrone (hooking) and Bryce Evans (roughing) were penalized within a minute and a half of each other. However, even though they were two men up, the team could only be penalized, as Troy was penalized to waste a golden chance for a goal.

With his two assists, Bello overtook McLinden as the team’s leader in assists.
