It’s that time of year. Senior athletes are officially announcing their commitment to colleges. This is especially the case at BPHS. Senior Jovian Smith, a defensive end and tight end for the football team and a forward for the basketball team, recently committed to continue his academic and football career at IUP.
This is a true milestone for Jovian, who, for the past four years, has been a force on both the football and basketball teams.
Q & A with Jovian:
Q: What was the first thing you felt or thought when it became official?
A: Relieved. It was a very stressful process. And very excited.
Q: Why did you choose this school and football program? What stood out most to you?
A: I love their coaches and the atmosphere of being there for gamedays. And I love their education.
Q: Looking back, when did you first realize you wanted to play football in college?
A: I’ve always wanted to play football in college ever since I was little.
Q: Who’s been the biggest influence in your football journey—coach, family, teammate—and why?
A: My dad. He used to be my coach when I was little. I feel like he set the standard for on the field and how you’re supposed to play.
Q: What part of your game did you work the hardest on to reach this point?
A: My ability in the past game. Being able to make plays and catches.
Q: What’s a moment from your high school career that you’ll never forget?
A: Beating Woodland Hills in the playoffs.
Q: How do you plan to balance college academics and football?
A: I try to balance it.
Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to younger players who dream of playing in college?
A: Just stay focused. Keep your head straight. Hard work beats talent.
Q: What would you say to your younger self right now?
A: Keep your head up. Keep trying. Don’t give up.
Q: What are you most excited about heading into your first season at college?
A: I’m excited for the competition.
Q: Off the field: how do you relax or unwind when you’re not training or studying?
A: I watch TV and movies.
Q: Pregame ritual or song that always gets you hyped?
A: Elm Street by Jimmy Wopo
Q: Favorite player or college game you watched growing up?
A: The Florida Gators games.
Q: One word your teammates would use to describe you?
A: Dependable.
