Mason Kernan looks to pull his opponent’s head under in his 113-pound match.

The varsity wrestling team beat Ringgold in their first section match of the season 44-27 Wednesday night.

The team was hot off of a fifth-place finish in the highly competitive Eastern Area Invitational. In that tournament, Mason Kernan placed first, Ryan Walsh placed second, Kyle Pherdehirt and Aiden Bench each took fifth, and Bryson Bench and Anthony Zaboroski each placed sixth.

“We are all just working and it’s gonna pay off eventually, whether it’s on or off the mat. We’re becoming the best versions of ourselves every day,” said Mason Kernan.

The Hawks got six pins on the night. Aiden Bench (113), Rocco Delgreco (132), Bryson Bench (138), Ethan Higgins (145), Cordan McDonnell (152), and Ryan Walsh (172) all earned falls. Mason Kernan won by tech fall and AJ Tomaino won by a decision.

The team will wrestle at the moon duals on Saturday.
