Sophomore Bryson Bench looks to take down his opponent in his match vs. USC on Wednesday, Dec. 11.

The Hawks wrestling squad broke their losing streak to the Upper St. Clair Panthers Wednesday night, beating them 45-30.

The match started with a forfeit at 106 pounds by freshman Kyle Pferdihert. Later on came a pin by sophomore Bryson Bench at 126 pounds, bringing the score to 12-6.

After a decision by senior Parker Loera 4-0 at 138 pounds, the Hawks made their way through to the 152-pound bout, finding themselves down 18-15. But after a pin by junior Vinny Riepole, they regained the lead 21-18.

The Hawks and Panthers had a common theme for the night, alternating match wins. But seniors Brandon Hartman (170 pounds) and Riley O’Mara (182 pounds) got the tide rolling with pins followed by forfeit wins at 195 and 220 by seniors Luke Montgomery and Tyler Thimons.

“We are improving on the things we had to work on and it is showing,” Montgomery said.

The Hawks head to Moon Area High School for the Moon Duals this Saturday, Dec. 14.
