Cool Springs Sports Complex was rocking on Sunday night, and it wasn’t because Mr. Fink was playing in a late-night men’s soccer league, but because history was in the making.

The St. Germaine CYO basketball team, which is made up of Bethel Park seniors, opened their season with a big win over the defending state champion, St. Gabriel.

Coming off a disappointing first season together, GM Chris Cassano did some shopping in the off-season and it paid off on Sunday night.

Adding 6-foot-5 forward Austin Cortopassi and All-Conference defensive lineman Brandon Cole was a big aid on the glass.

A slow start yielded a 15-point deficit, but as the game went on they found their stride and a comeback was brewing.  3-pointers by Will Patrizio, Andrew Cassano, and Trevor Morrison closed the gap in the final minute to make it only a two-point game, and eventually Nate Currie’s free throws evened the score.

A St. Gabe’s bucket followed, and the Germaine Giants just couldn’t recover, and they went down with a loss.

Another big move in the off-season was the expansion of the coaching staff, a three-headed monster of Head Coach Kevin Kogler and his team of assistants, Evan Bromley and Sean McGowan.

“I thought we showed some good things and I’m really pleased with our effort. I think this season is going in the right direction,” said the floor boss Kogler.

The Germaine Giants also picked up a win Wednesday night against St. Simon and Jude.
