Junior Luke Montgomery capped off his season with a seventh-place finish in the state at the PIAA Championships.

Montgomery started out the tournament falling 11-4 to Northeast’s Jameel Coles, who placed fifth.

He then rattled off three straight wins, starting with a 7-0 decision over Tyler Neglia of Wallenpaupack, then a 10-0 major decision over Logan Greene of Pennridge, and a blood-round pin in 2:45 over Brayden Crocker of Cranberry.

Montgomery then fell to Max Shaw of Thomas Jefferson in the consolation of four.

He then finished the tournament off with an 8-1 decision over Ethan Seely of Great Valley.

“The hardest part was the offseason practices. States was easy because I believed in myself,” Montgomery said.

In the team score, Montgomery (a one-man team) put up eight points for the Black Hawks and finished in 60th place out 134.

With his seventh-place finish, Montgomery is the first Bethel Park wrestler coming home with a medal from the PIAA Championships since Nino Bonacorssi and his brother Jason two years earlier.

Montgomery finished his junior campaign with a record of 25-6 this season.
