PSU’s Barkley declares for NFL Draft

As was much anticipated, Penn State running back Saquan Barkley has decided to forgo his senior season and declare for the NFL Draft. Barkley is expected to be a top five pick in the upcoming NFL draft.

Saquan is certainly one of the best players of all time to wear the blue and white. The junior is the all time Penn State leader in rushing touchdowns (39) and all-purpose yards  (5,279).

This past season, Barkley was incredible, leading the nation in all-purpose yards per game along with rushing for 1,271 yards and setting a Penn State record for receptions by a running back with 54.

Penn State closed out their season with a 35-28 over Washington in the Fiesta Bowl Saturday, Dec. 30 to finish 11-2. In his final game, Barkley rushed for 137 yards on 18 carries highlighted by a 92 yard rushing touchdown which tied the longest in Penn State history.

Scouts are impressed with Barkley’s all around game. Aside from his running abilities, Barkley has proven to be an exceptional pass catcher and great in pass protection. The running back is also extremely strong. Barkley set a PSU power clean record last off season of 405 pounds. Oh yeah, he’s been clocked at 4.38 in the 40 yard dash as well.

People around the program though rave about Barkley as a person. Newly named offensive coordinator Rickey Rahne sent out a tweet saying:

“It has been an honor getting to know this young man. Everyone sees him as a great player but hopefully everyone in our program will remember him more for being a tremendous teammate. #WeAre”

These intangibles are something NFL executives will be very impressed with. ESPN’s draft expert Mel Kiper has Barkley number one on his big board.

Barkley will look to continue to impress scouts at his pro day and at the combine before the draft on April 26.

Saquan Barkley certainly left a lasting legacy at Penn State and has the attitude and talent to succeed in the NFL.
