Injuries are hindering Thunder once again this year

This weekend, the Oklahoma City Thunder announced that Kevin Durant, last year’s MVP, would be out indefinitely due to foot injuries. This will be a huge factor as they are in the race for a playoff spot. But how big of an impact?

Within the last month, Russel Westbrook has been an absolute tank recording three triple-doubles. He has carried the Thunder throughout Kevin’s absence. He is probably at the top of the race for MVP in the whole league. The only other person to record stats like him in a season was Jason Kidd in the ’07-’08 season. The next closest player to have that many triple doubles is James Harden with three.

Another huge impact in the playoff race is the injury of Serge Ibaka. He had surgery on his right knee. Although he is expected to miss four to six weeks Ibaka said he is looking to be back in three to four weeks. The absence of him last year was a huge impact on the outcome of their dismissal in the playoffs. Although Enes Kanter and Steven Adams are two good defenders, they will miss Ibaka.

During the past year, injuries have hindered the Thunder from achieving their true potential. They will need to put together the pieces they still have and hope that the team will be back to full health before the Oklahoma season is done.
