Patriots win fourth Super Bowl

There had been talk and coverage two weeks before the big game about deflated balls and Marshawn Lynch and the media, but both teams got to settle it all on the field.

The Patriots “deflate gate” controversy was the talk of the sports world, but the Patriots did not allow this be a distraction. Patriots coach Bill Belichick answered one of the many questions about this topic by stating, “Again, I appreciate the questions, but I have covered everything I can cover the previous week and my attention is focused on the Seattle Seahawks. Our job is to get ready to play this game Sunday and that’s where it’s going to be from here on out.”

Marshwan Lynch was getting very annoyed with the media as the week went on. After being threatened to be fined if he didn’t speak at media day, Lynch answered every question by saying, “I’m here so I don’t get fined.”

At the short media press conference on Thursday, Jan. 29, Lynch actually spoke, but not about football. He instead went on a long rant on why he doesn’t like talking to the media.

He said: “Look, all week, I told y’all what’s up. For some reason y’all continue to come back and do the same thing y’all did. I don’t know what story y’all trying to get out of me. I don’t care what image y’all trying to portray of me. But it don’t matter what ya’ll think, what y’all say of me. Because when I go home at night, the same people I look in the face, my family that I love, (laughs) that’s all that matter to me.”

The Seahawks were going for back-to-back championships, while the Patriots were back trying to win their fourth Super Bowl, losing their previous two.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was playing in his NFL record sixth Super Bowl, and trying to win his fourth Super Bowl to tie himself with Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana for the most Super Bowls won by a quarterback.

Seahawks quarterback Russel Wilson has posted almost identical numbers to Tom Brady through his first three seasons in the NFL, and was going for his second Super Bowl already. The only other quarterback to win two Super Bowls in their first three seasons was Tom Brady.

Seahawks kicker Steven Hauschka kicked things off at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time at the University of Phoenix Stadium, home of the Arizona Cardinals. This was the second time Arizona had hosted the Super Bowl.

The game started out slow with both teams struggling to move the ball. Except on one possession, the Patriots offense had success, but was intercepted by cornerback Jeremy Lane.

On the Patriots next possession, they would capitalize. Brady hit wide receiver Brandon LaFell for the TD.

The Seahawks struggled to do anything offensively. Many of their early possessions resulted in three and outs.

The Seahawks  finally scored on a three-yard run up the middle by Lynch. This was their first good offensive drive of the game.

The Patriots answered right back on their next offensive possession. Brady hit big tight end Rob Gronkowski on a pass towards the corner of the endzone.

That last Patriot score was with 31 seconds left, which so many thought that would be the final score of the half. But after some big gains and a facemask, the Seahawks were in position to score. With six seconds remaining in the half, the Seahawks were on the 11-yard line. They decided to take one last shot to the end zone instead of kicking the guaranteed field goal. The risk would pay off as Wilson hit wide receiver Chris Mathews on a strike to tie the game up 14-14 heading into halftime.

After a slow start to the game on offense, both teams started to pick it up towards the end of the half.

The Patriots second half got off to a night-marish start. On the first possession of the second half, the Seahawks would kick a 27-yard field goal. The next possesion Brady threw another pick to Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner over the middle. The Seahawks executed on that turnover with Wilson hitting reciever Doug Baldwin for the touchdown.

Things remained the same the rest of the quarter with the score favoring the Seahawks 24-14 heading into the fourth.

After everything seemed to be heading the Seahawks’ way, Brady hit receiver Danny Amendola over the middle to make the score 24-21.

The Patriots scored again on their next possession with a Brady pass to receiver Julian Edelman. This would give them the lead 28-24 with 2:06 remaining in the game.

The Seahawks would get to work right away hitting Lynch on a 31-yard pass. Later in the drive, Wilson threw a deep pass to receiver Jermaine Kearse, who would make one of the best catches anyone had ever seen. The Seahawks ran the clock down to 26 seconds having the ball on the one-yard line. It was second down while the Seahawks still had their final timeout. On the next play, Wilson dropped back and threw a pick to Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler.

The Patriots kneed the ball twice, and once again became Super Bowl champions!

The Seahawks received a lot of scrutiny after the game for passing the ball at the one-yard line. With 26 seconds left, a timeout, and arguably the best power back in the game, you would think they would have run the ball.

When asked by many reporters on the decision, Carroll said: “Here’s the deal. We sent our guys on the field — wide receivers on the field — to spread them out. They ran on their goal line (package), they got all their big guys out there.

“At that moment, I didn’t want to waste a run play against their goal line guys, throw the ball and come back on 3rd or 4th (down) where we could match up. So it was really a clear thought … but it didn’t work out right. We throw the ball … and they make a big play.”

The Patriots were back at the top after finishing their last couple seasons not how they wanted. Brady received his third MVP, and Coach Bill Belichick tied himself with former Steelers coach Chuck Noll for the most Super Bowl wins of all time at four.

As we now wait for next season, we can look back at one of the best Super Bowl’s of all time.
