The BPSD, a school well-known for its commitment and dedication towards athletics, made a major announcement on social media on Sept. 16.
The district announced a change to the logos representing their athletic teams, the first major update made to the logos in 30 years.
Since the school officially adopted it in the mid-1990s, the athletic primary logo has been the beloved Black Hawk symbol created by Ned Garnhart, a former BPHS art teacher, a decade prior.
The logo, featuring the well-known and familiar Bethel Park black and orange colors, has over time become integral to the school’s identity.
Garnhart’s design became iconic across multiple generations of Bethel Park students and became a central part of every school in the district
However, in 2025, the district took a bold step forward with the introduction of a modernized rendition of Garnhart’s logo, created by Noah Knerr.
The district’s goal was to update the design’s appeal while also maintaining core elements of the original.
Even with a mixed reception, many have appreciated the logo’s ability to uphold previously held traditions, most notably having the Black Hawk face left.
The modernized redesign of the Black Hawk wasn’t the only adjustment made; BPSD also introduced a long-awaited secondary athletic logo.
The new secondary logo depicts a whole new design of the Black Hawk, one still facing left, but with a more menacing and intimidating presence than ever before.
Not to overlook as well, the introduction of the secondary logo has received a much more favorable reaction from those residing in Bethel Park.
Despite receiving a varied response towards the updated primary design, the overhaul symbolizes Bethel Park’s strides to keep up with the times.
As the BPSD continues to evolve, the new logo, no matter what it is on, will act as a symbol of unity across the community.
