12 killed in shooting at California bar

Late at night on Wednesday, Nov. 7, a man forced his way into the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, Ca. and had opened fire on those in the club. He came in on a college night when the local college kids were dancing and having fun.

The shooter’s motive is yet to be discovered. The authorities have only found one handgun so far in the investigation. The gunman has been identified as 28-year-0ld Ian David Long.

He had claimed twelve peoples’ lives that evening. The shooter had been dead by the time the police arrived at the scene.

This includes Ventura County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Helus who was one of the first to respond.

A news editor of the student paper, Pepperdine Graphic, said: “You hear about these shootings and the people that are the first responders and that really lay down their lives to help other people… I think it’s remarkable what these people do and I can’t say enough for individuals like him.”

News editor Madeline Carr knew several people in the bar that evening. She and many others are in shock.

“Pepperdine’s a pretty small community, a pretty sheltered community… so it’s one of these events that it’s hard to rationalize it happening here,” she said.

Although the community is facing much strife, Carr believes that they will come together to overcome this tragic hurdle.

Carr states, “It’s heartbreaking and I know that the community will definitely be rallying together for the sergeant and other individuals.”

More information is on its way from the investigation.
