Nick Whalen

Nick Whalen, Staff writer

With the ability to cure diseases if he could, compassionate is a great way to describe 11th grader Nick Whalen. The first-year staff writer says second-year staff writer Meghan DeHaven convinced him to take Scholastic Publications.

This year, Nick plans to work exclusively on the newspaper, despite the yearbook being an option as well. He intends to write opinion and sports-related articles.

Most days after school, Nick can be found working, playing video games, or watching sports. Right now, he doesn't have any plans for after high school, but Nick says he hopes to find something he's passionate about this year through different electives.

When asked, Nick said he had always been interested in sports. He says, "I grew up watching sports with my dad, and it just became something we could always talk about together. I became passionate about it."

Nick doesn't have a dream vacation spot or place he wants to travel to, but he easily prefers the city over the country. In his words, he's "not a farmer."

If he had to pick a favorite animal, he'd pick ducks. 'They're kinda cool," Nick says. "You're like hey duck and they're like 'quack quack.'"
