Jan. 13, 2026 will go down in history for fans of the 6-time Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers, as Head Coach Mike Tomlin announced that his 19-season run with the team would be coming to an end.
This decision follows a disappointing NFL Wildcard Weekend loss to the Houston Texans, 30-6.
The seventh straight playoff loss in a row the team has suffered, not winning since their AFC Divisional Round victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2016 NFL Playoffs.
Outrage from many Pittsburgh fans came from the continuation of the streak, as they became dissatisfied with having .500 seasons that ended in playoff blowouts.
What follows are the results of Pittsburgh’s last six playoff appearances:
- 2017 – Jacksonville Jaguars (10-6) def. Pittsburgh Steelers (13-3): 45-42
- 2020 – Cleveland Browns (11-5) def. Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4): 48-37
- 2021 – Kansas City Chiefs (12-5) def. Pittsburgh Steelers (9-7-1): 42-21
- 2023 – Buffalo Bills (11-6) def. Pittsburgh Steelers (10-7): 31-17
- 2024 – Baltimore Ravens (13-4) def. Pittsburgh Steelers (10-7): 28-14
- 2025 – Houston Texans (12-5) def. Pittsburgh Steelers (10-7): 30-6
Over the years, criticism towards Tomlin’s inability to adjust defensively, while also being unable to develop a capable offense, grew louder. Fans were disgruntled.
The fans knew it was time, and so did Tomlin. However, by stepping down, Tomlin is not fully out of the organization.
If other teams are interested in acquiring the former Super Bowl champion, they will need to negotiate a trade with Pittsburgh, a team that is now looking for a head coach of their own.
A situation that the team has not found itself in often during its history, as Tomlin was only their third head coach since 1969, following Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher.
. Whilst a majority of fans did want Tomlin gone, it is bittersweet as this acts as a true end of an era.
Coming alongside the firing of John Harbaugh a week earlier, and following the departure of former adversaries in Bill Belichick and Pete Caroll, Tomlin was the last of his generation.
Even if his tenure was a mixed bag in Pittsburgh, Tomlin will be fondly remembered by fans in the history books.
