Stadium Series game highlighted with a Pens win

On Saturday night, the Pittsburgh Penguins played at Heinz Field against their in-state rival, the Philadelphia Flyers. The city was packed, as this was the second time the Penguins have played at Heinz Field (the first was the 2011 Winter Classic against the Washington Capitals).

The stadium was packed with an estimated 67,000 plus with Pittsburgh and Philadelphia fans who came from all over the state to watch their favorite teams clash.

The better team was the Penguins who ultimately won 4-2 capped off by a strong performance by Jake Guentzel, the game’s first star. The goal scorers for the Pens were Sidney Crosby, Nick Bonino, Matt Cullen, and Chad Ruhwedel. The two Flyers goals were scored by Jake Voracek and Shayne Gostisbehere.

Before the puck dropped, there was a huge Pregame tailgate at Stage AE where a local band played. There were also hockey activities such as target shooting and picture opportunities along with giveaways. Food was also available to those fans who stopped by. The Stanley Cup even made an appearance, but the line to snag a picture was roughly an hour and a half long.

Next to the main ice rink at Heinz Field inside the stadium, there was a mini rink where local elementary hockey players skated before the game and at each intermission. Also, the Penguins from the Pittsburgh Zoo ran and slid around on the mini ice before the game.

During the first period there was an announcement made that the Pittsburgh Penguins and PPG were donating a check in the amount of $100,000 to the South Park Ice Rink. The money will be used to remodel the current rink as well as adding a new area for kids to skate. Click here for more information.

During the first intermission break, the local band from Western PA, Train, performed live and sang some of their greatest hits such as “Drops of Jupiter” and “Drive By.”

It was a night to remember.
