This week’s Athlete of the Week is being awarded to junior Kam Lach for her outstanding basketball skills shown and her commitment to girls’ basketball. Congrats, Kam!

Recently, the Lady Hawks took the win against Hempfield in the championship game of the Tip-Off Tournament at BPHS on Saturday, Dec. 10. With 12 points, Lach was one of the top scorers for the game and helped bring home the victory.

Lach said, “I think we played well, everybody contributed to the solid team win.”

When asked about what qualities the team brought to the court in order to bring back the championship win, Lach responded, “We had a solid defensive and we shared the ball well.”

Even though the Lady Hawks’ games have just begun, they have been putting in countless hours of practice, which put them at an advantage over their opponents at last weekend’s tournament.

“The season never really ends…,” Lach said. “We have pre-season and then we go all the way through the summer, so it doesn’t really end. We’re always together.”

With the exciting and long-awaited season of games and tournaments beginning, the lady hawks are more than stoked. They are mentally and physically prepared for anything that comes at them– whether that be a ball or an opposing player (lol).

“We’re an underdog this year so nobody is expecting us to come out and win but that’s what we’re gonna do,” Lach said.

“If we just play solid “D” and execute the plays and pass the ball and everyone shares it…we’ll be fine.”

Lach was first taught about the wonderful game of basketball from her dad when she was younger, and even today, he still teaches her.

“He’s always pushing me to do better and play harder.”

Being one of the top players for the team, one can say Lach has put many years of sweat, blood, and tears into the game. She started playing in 2nd grade and hasn’t took a season or year off yet.

However, she says that 6th grade was the turning point of her basketball focus. She was putting in more time and hard work every chance she got.

“I actually wanted to be there,” Lach said.

This being her junior year, she reflected on how she got to where she is today in her basketball career and if she wants to continue to playing post high school.

“I’m thinking about playing in college, but I’m not totally sure yet.”

When asked what BP can look forward to with the start of the season, Lach said, “A lot of surprises. We’re going to surprise everyone.”

Congrats, Kam on Athlete of the Week and good luck to the Lady Hawks on their exciting season ahead!
