Fan gets hit in the head at Pirates game

It was definitely a disturbing sight to see on Monday when a woman was drilled in the back of her head by a fouled off baseball. It was the top of the second at PNC park when Starling Castro of the Chicago Cubs fouled off the pitch.

Even though the mesh net separates the field form the seating section directly behind, the ball stretched the mesh and struck the woman in the back of the head. Few noticed initially, but some saw the woman reach for the back of her head and collapse onto the ground.

Francisco Cervelli, the catcher for the Pirates, realized what happened and walked towards toward the mesh to investigate.

Later Joe Maddon, the Cubs’ manager, talking about the situation, said, “(Chris) Coghlan thought the ball hit the wall,” referring to the sound that resulted from the impact.

The game was delayed twenty-three minutes as the fan received the needed medical attention.

She was released form the hospital Tuesday, and a statement from a Pirates’ representative basically said that she was doing okay and that they were going to reach out to her to show their support.
