The Pittsburgh Penguins have had a more than a successful start to the 2013-2014 season.
They had their first game of the season on October 3 at home against The New Jersey Devils, winning in a shutout 3-0.
The Penguins’ strength was tested early on when goalie, Thomas Vokoun had a serious injury that will put him out for 3 to 6 months. Even though Vokoun is out on injury reserve, the Pens’ net is still secure with goalie, Marc-Andre Fleury. With all the injuries the Penguins have been facing, the defenseman Paul Martin, who had been out a number of games due to an injury, has returned and was named one of the three stars in their most recent victory over the Washington Capitals
There have been many key players who have helped the Pens get off to a good start. Center and Captain, Sidney Crosby, helps the Pens score goals and stay on top of their opponents and has a total of 10 goals for the team. Evgeni Malkin, also a center, is Sidney’s right-hand man on the ice and has 19 assists so far. Chris Kunitz, a left winger, helps the penguins on the ice, holds down the left side, and has 9 goals. Pascal Dupuis, a right winger, has 9 assists, and Matt Niskanen, a defenseman, helps keep the puck out of the Penguins’ territory and has 9 assists so far.
The season started like any other season, fans ready for hockey and the Penguins just the same. With 14 wins and 8 losses and a 1st place position in the Metropolitan league, the Pens are on the right path and making this city proud of its hockey team.
