Michael Horgan, with family by his side, signs his letter of intent to play soccer at RMU.

On Monday, May 2, senior Michael Horgan signed his letter of intent to play soccer at Robert Morris University. He was surrounded by friends and family as well as head coach Mr. Galietta and assistant coaches Mr. Bellini and Mr. Fink.

The ceremony started off with a few words by guidance counselor Mr. Knapp, who explained the meaning of the occasion and congratulated Horgan. Next, each coach stepped up to recount Horgan’s soccer experience throughout high school.

“I was lucky enough to have Michael in class as well as on the field, and he always was able to make me smile,” said history teacher and coach Mr. Fink.

Lastly, Horgan’s parents each said a few words, and athletic director Amy Scheuneman spoke and reminded him that no matter where he goes from here, he will always represent Bethel Park. Also present was superintendent Joseph Pasquerilla.

Horgan will be studying Sports Management at RMU.

“I would love to be a coach when I’m older if it works out,” he said.

Aside from the excellent Sports Management program, Horgan decided upon RMU because of the D1 team and the fact that his father also went to RMU to play soccer.

“I got interested in soccer because of my dad. He played in high school and college, so I got started when I was 5 years old. Dan Vater and Matty K were also big inspirations for me coming into high school as a freshman,” Horgan said.

When asked about his advice for high school athletes, he said, “Focus on academics first. If athletics ends up working out, definitely go for it!”
