On Wednesday, April 13, over 90 new members were inducted into the National Honor Society.

Invitations to the Bethel Park chapter went out during the second week of February and applications were due by March 16.

Applications for the chapter consist of two teacher recommendations, a leadership check sheet, proof of community service, an essay demonstrating the students’ aptitude in the four pillars of NHS (scholarship, leadership, character, and service), and a detailed proposal for a project the chapter can undertake the following year.

“Bethel Park National Honor Society has the highest standards for membership in Western PA,” said advisor Mr. Lorenzi.

Members of NHS and potential inductees are required to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.85 or higher, perform 35 hours of community service, starting from the 4th quarter of the year prior, and have proof of leadership. Also, members must attend 70% of committee and general membership meetings.

At the Inductee Ceremony this year, there were four speeches given by students and NHS Executive Board members Joseph Campion, Sarah Amato, Jack Brownfield, and Claire Makowsi. Each student discussed a pillar of the National Honor Society and significance of it to both the chapter and to his or her own life.

“One of the common themes throughout the night was that the practice of community service is rewarding. Judge Arnoni did a wonderful job echoing this sentiment,” said Mr. Lorenzi.

Magisterial District Judge Ron Arnoni was the keynote speaker; he was followed by Mr. Lorenzi and Dr. Jansante.

After each inductee was called, introduced, and given his or her certificate, light refreshments were served in the cafeteria for everyone at the event.

Mr. Lorenzi gave advice for the new inductees: “You all have an opportunity to make the community a better place. Always remember that the NHS is about more than high QPAs. We want selfless people that are interested in helping their fellow man.”
