This time of the year, while some people may be throwing away their pumpkins, others are launching theirs.
On Wednesday, Nov. 6, Mrs. Durmis’s and Miss Tkach’s physics classes launched pumpkins on Purkey Field.
“I have been doing this project for two years,” Mrs. Durmis said. She started to do this project to explain projectile motion.
When she taught at a private school, she got the idea when the pumpkin videos on YouTube were popular, and she thought that it would be a fun way to explain projectile motion while having the students participate in a hands-on activity.
Some students looked up their designs on the Internet and others just had original ideas. Some of the catapults were different sizes and weights, and some used bungee cords to help with the launch.
So, if you ever notice a pumpkin patch growing in the outfield of Purkey Field, you will know how the seeds got there.
