With a 6-1 upset win against No. 6 Greater Latrobe on May 12, the No. 11 varsity baseball team has moved on to the quarterfinals in the 5A WPIAL playoffs.
Leading to this win was senior left-handed pitcher Matthew Hughes, who, as the starter, pitched for three innings and four strikeouts.
Senior right-handed pitcher and infielder Michael (Mike) Bruckner pitched four innings and four strikeouts, and also had two hits.
Junior catcher Eric Miehl had a two-RBI double.
Senior infielder, catcher, and right-handed pitcher Nicholas (Nick) Rillo had two hits.
“Honestly, we just wanted to score runs early and score someone early and put pressure on them, and we had confidence in our pitchers to hold them down,” said Rillo.
Sophomore outfielder and right-handed pitcher Benjamin (Ben) Thomas had three hits.
“We knew they were a good team and coached very well, we got base runners,” said Thomas.
While the whole varsity team has been called up to the plate, the following JV players have been called up:
- Dominic Lentz. (infield, outfield, right-handed pitcher, 5-foot-8, Class of 2027)
- Jordan Tewell (infield, shortstop/ second baseman, 5-foot-11, Class of 2028)
- Cayson Fisher (infield, right-handed pitcher, 5-foot-9, Class of 2029)
The team will face No. 3 Thomas Jefferson on May 19 at 4 p.m. at West Mifflin High School.
