Fisher, Sierka to play for WPIAL tennis doubles championship

Right around the same time Wednesday afternoon when most cell phones were receiving test alerts from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Cami Fisher and Lily Sierka were testing their talents on the tennis court in the WPIAL 3A girls tennis championships at North Allegheny High School.

The doubles duo defeated No. 6 Abby Santora and Mollie Sclichter of Oakland Catholic 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals to advance to Thursday’s finals.

In the first round, they beat No. 15 Gabrielle Moder and Olivia Garofalo from Baldwin 10-2.

Following that win, they bested No. 10 Ria Khazanchi and Keira Wise of Moon 10-2.

In the finals, which goes down at 1 p.m. at North Allegheny High School, Fisher and Sierka will face the No. 1 seeded team of Elena Sobol and Rachel Nath from Shady Side Academy.

The winning team will be crowned WPIAL Champions.

By reaching the finals, Fisher and Sierka have automatically qualified for the PIAA Championships. The top three teams qualify.

Katie Peterson and Emma Smith also had a strong showing at the tournament.

In the first round, they defeated No. 12 Sienna Siegel and Anna Kintner of Fox Chapel 10-6.

In the second round, they lost to No. 4 Ellen Lieu and Michelle Yan of Franklin Regional 10-8.
