NHL is hopeful for a return this season

With sports on pause during the coronavirus pandemic, the NBA and NHL seasons are currently suspended.

With that being said, don’t expect hockey to return for the 2019-2020 campaign.

The last game of hockey was played on March 11. Our Pittsburgh Penguins’ last game was on March 10 when they defeated the New Jersey Devils on the road.

One of the biggest reasons that hockey will not return this season is due to the lack of resources they currently have. They don’t have facilities to practice skating, shooting, or team training. Goaltenders are also not seeing live shots.

Sure, players can still workout at home with lifting, running and conditioning, but it is not the same as getting back on the ice with their teammates.

The NHL also has a big problem with their scheduling.

They have a current plan to start team workouts by May 15.

If they were to make an attempt to return, they would need a few weeks, if not a month, to get back into playing shape. That would mean they would not start games until mid-June.

By the time they finished the regular season, it would be mid-July.

By the time they finished the postseason, it would be mid-September.

This is a tough situation because every new season starts in October.

They would either have no off-season, or have to delay the start of the 2020-2021 season.

Hockey is in one of the worst positions during this pandemic, and it could cost them the season.

For the Pittsburgh Penguins and their fans, this would not be good.

With time winding down on the careers of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, this was one of their best chances to win the Stanley Cup.

The Penguins made multiple trades for players whose contracts are expiring and are not getting any younger.

On the bright side, even if the season is canceled, they still have most of their core pieces returning.

Hockey returning is still a possibility, but unlikely
