Kobe Bryant, Lakers shooting guard, stands ready to shoot a free throw during Tuesday nights pre-season game against the Golden State Warriors. Bryant was essential in bringing together a large point gap late in the second quarter, after the Warriors took the early lead.

On Sunday, Jan. 26, the world lost a legend.

While flying in his helicopter with his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and seven others, the aircraft carrying Kobe Bryant went down and crashed, killing all nine people on board.

The news shocked not only the basketball world but the entire world.

The 41-year-old played 20 seasons in the NBA, all with the Los Angeles Lakers.

In his career, he won five NBA championships, was an 18-time all-star, and named MVP in 2008. He also won the slam dunk competition in 1997, was a 15-time all-defensive player, and is fourth on the all-time scoring list.

He’s remembered best by his 81-point game and his 60-point game to end his career.

Bryant also won an Oscar for his short, animated story, “Dear Basketball.”

After hearing the news, people all around the world were in shock and grief.

Many NBA players had visible grief as they found out the news before their games.

A moment of silence was held before every NBA game on Sunday. Almost every team in every game honored Bryant by taking an 8 and 24-second violation, the two numbers he wore while playing for the Lakers.

Condolences were expressed by former players and politicians throughout the world, including former teammate and best friend Shaq, former player Magic Johnson, and President Donald Trump.

Hundreds of people gathered outside Staples Center to pay their respects to the great Kobe Bryant.

That night, the Grammy’s were held at the Staples Center, where hundreds of celebrities also paid their respects to the “House that Kobe Built.”
