Lady Hawks get two big section wins
This week, the Lady Hawks (6-0, 11-0) picked up two big section wins against Connellsville (1-5, 4-8) and Canon-McMillan (0-6, 1-11).
On Monday, Jan. 6, the Lady Hawks took an hour-and-a-half bus ride down to Connellsville for a WPIAL 6A Section 2 game.
For most teams, a long bus ride usually dooms a fast start, but this was not the case for the Blackhawks as the girls jumped out to a 10-2 first-quarter lead and broke the game open with a 28-5 halftime lead.
The Hawks ended up doubling the Falcons in points winning 50-25.
Junior Olivia Westphal said “It was a great team section win. The bus ride was a little bit rough, but we came out strong.”
Junior Olivia Westphal helped out on the fast start scoring 14 of her 18 points in the first frame and senior Lauren Mullen scored 8 of her 13 points in the first half as well.
Senior Maddie Dziezgowski added 15 points.
Then on Thursday, Jan. 9, the Hawks picked up their second section win of the week with a 60-24 victory over the Big Macs.
The Hawks jumped out to a 27-5 first-quarter lead and never looked back.
Senior Lauren Mullen lead with 20 points and junior Olivia Westphal had 15 points.
Senior Maddie Dziezgowski scored 10 points.
Speaking about the win over the Big Macs, Mullen said, “We played really well together and really had fun.”
Next week, the girls are away for both section contests playing at Baldwin (4-2, 8-3) on Monday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. and Hempfield (2-4, 5-6) on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m.
