Hawks beat Spartans at the buzzer
On Tuesday night, the now 5-1 boys basketball team defeated the then 4-1 Hempfield Spartans 49-47.
After a relatively low-scoring game, with just 4.9 seconds left, Ryan Meis took an inbound pass from Anthony Chiccitt, and scored a dramatic buzzer beater with a slick fade-away shot.

At the conclusion of the first half, the Hawks lead with 30 points to the Spartans 22 points.
When asked Ryan Meis what Coach Bears said in the locker room at the half, he replied with, “Play smart and continue to play good defense and control the glass.”
Meis’ response to his end-of-the-half speech was, “We have to focus to capture the win.”
As the third quarter came to an end, the Hawks maintained the lead, but only by five points. The Hawks made an explosive run in the fourth quarter, but the Spartans refused to yield and tied the game with 2:16 minutes left.
The game remained tied until Meis’ game-winner.
When asked what his thoughts were on hitting the game winner on such an amazing shot, Meis said, “I didn’t know what to really do, but when I saw my teammates we all celebrated together.”
The Hawks travel to the 1-3 Gateway Gators Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. game. They then host the Bethel Park Christmas Tournament on December 27 and 28.
