Rower Hathaway heading to National Championships after spectacular finish at Junior Rowing Championship
BP sophomore rower Wyatt Hathaway is heading to the USRowing Youth National Championships after a close finish in the Midwest Junior Rowing Championships.
The Junior Rowing Championships occurred May 16-17 in Bethel, Ohio.
Hathaway, a member of the Three Rivers Junior Team, partnered with North Allegheny junior Jonathan Hydock in the Boys Varsity-2 Final. The top three in the race advanced to nationals. The team was neck and neck with Detroit all throughout the race. BP pulled ahead late, though, and crossed the finish line with a time of seven minutes and 11.22 seconds. This was less than a second less than Detroit, who crossed the finish line with a mark of seven minutes and 11.82 seconds.
The team will play at the USRowing Youth National Championships. They occur on June 12-14 in Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida.
This is the third straight year that a boys pair from the team has advanced to nationals.
Two pairs of girls also advanced to nationals after Shaler’s Jess Fabian and Pine-Richland’s Abbi Altman finished first, and homeschooled Sophie Winbush and Quaker Valley’s Anna Farnan finished second.
“You always strive to get a medal, and Wyatt and I are practicing more so we improve,” Hydock said to the Tribune Review.
