Penn State is well represented in this year’s rookie class
Penn State will have four former players going into training camp on an NFL roster. This rookie class includes offensive lineman Donovan Smith, tight end Jessie James, cornerback Adrian Amos, and linebacker Mike Hull.
Donovan Smith was the first player from Penn State selected. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Smith with their second round draft pick. Donovan looks to compete for a starting position right away, as he served as Penn State’s left tackle last season.
Former WPIAL standout from South Allegheny, Jesse James, was selected to the hometown Pittsburgh Steelers. Pittsburgh’s tight end Heath Miller is heading towards the end of his career, so the Steelers were looking for someone down the road. James will serve as a backup this year, and maybe move into the starting role in a few years. He has great size, standing at 6’7”.
Adrian Amos the athletic cornerback was selected by the Chicago Bears in the fifth round. Amos was tied for the team lead in interceptions last season, and will look to fit into Chicago’s secondary which was one of the worst in the league last year.
Linebacker Mike Hull was not selected in the draft, but signed as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins. In Hull’s senior season he was named the Big Ten linebacker of the year, selected to the AP All American third team, and served as one of the teams captains this past season.
