Pirates Weekly Report: Week 2

The Pirates are now 6-7 going 3-3 in their last six games. Starting left fielder, Starling Marte has been on a tear lately hitting three home runs and eight RBI’s in the past week.

The Pirates rapped up their series against the Detroit Tigers by being shut out twice 2-0 and 1-0. Tigers starting pitchers Shane Greene and Alfredo Simon destroyed Pirate batters, only allowing five hits in two games. The Pirates needed to get back on track against the Milwaukee Brewers, and create some more offense.

The Pirates did exactly that, getting a three-game sweep, their first of the season, and scored five or more runs in each of the three games.

In the first game of the series, the Pirates had key players step up big time on the offensive side of the plate. Gregory Polanco went 3 for 4 and scored a run, along with Starling Marte going 2 for 4, and blasting a 460-foot home run.

Starting pitcher Vance Worley earned his first win of the year, striking out six.

In the second game of the series was when Marte really broke out, hitting a career high 5 RBIs in the Bucs 6-2 win.

Starting pitcher Jeff Locke improved his record to 2-0 on the season, allowing only one run and four hits.

In the series finale on Sunday, Pirates’ catcher Chris Stewart made his season debut after recovering from an injury. Stewert had a solid debut, driving in two runs and playing a solid defensive game at catcher.

Pedro Alvarez added his fourth home run of the season.

Gerrit Cole was solid, improving his record to 2-0, and closer Mark Melancon picked up his second save of the season.

There was a scary moment in the sixth inning when shortstop, Jordy Mercer got beamed in the chest with a 89-mph fastball. Mercer left the game, but luckily all x-rays were negative.

The Pirates are now finishing their home stand in a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs.

Pittsburgh dropped the first game of the series Monday night 5-2.

The Cubs were lead by rookie phenom Kris Bryant. Bryant had a three-run double, which later turned into a run.

Pirates’ pitcher A.J. Burnett was OK, giving up one earned run, and eight hits in six innings. He was not given much help though on offense.

The Pirates two loan runs came in the ninth. Starling Marte added another home run, and Andrew McCutchen had two hits and one RBI.

The Bucs are back at it tonight against the Cubs, where Francisco Liriano is expected to get the start for the Bucs against Cubs’ pitcher Travis Wood. Jordy Mercer is questionable for tonight’s game.
