Super Bowl matchup set
Sunday afternoon, the two best teams in their respected conference’s faced off to see who would advance to the Super Bowl.
First on tap was the NFC championship game, where the Green Bay Packers traveled to Seattle to take on the Seahawks. Seattle was heavily favored in the this game because of their home-field advantage, stellar defense, and an injury to Packer QB, Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers is dangerous outside the pocket, but not being 100% limited his mobility.
The game started off with a Richard Sherman interception for Seattle. That’s about all Seattle fans had to cheer about in the first half, as it got bad quick for the Seahawks.
Seahawk’s quarterback, Russel Wilson, had a nightmarish first half. He threw three interceptions, two to Packers rookie safety, Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix out of Alabama. Wilson only threw one completion in the first half.
They were not running the ball well, either.
The Packers capitalized well on their opportunities, but took some criticism after the game for not being more aggressive. Green Bay had the ball once on the one-yard line and once on the two-yard line, but decided not to go for the touchdown either time, and instead kicked the field goals.
Green Bay quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, threw a touchdown pass to receiver Randall Cobb towards the end of the first quarter to put the Packers up 13-0. Packers kicker Mason Crosby, would add another field goal in the second quarter to make it 16-0. The score would stay that way until halftime.
It really wasn’t going much better for the Seahawks to start the second half. Late in the third quarter, the Seahawks lined up for a field goal, but faked it while punter Bobby Ryan rolled out and threw a touch pass to undrafted free agent rookie lineman Gary Gilliam out of Penn State. This made the score 16-7. This was a huge risk for the Seahawks, because they needed to scavenge some some points after doing virtually nothing offensively.
The Seahawks, even after that play were still doing nothing offensively. Mason Crosby added a 48 yard field goal to put the Packers up 19-7 in the fourth quarter.
The Seahawks went three and out on their first possession in the fourth. On their next possession, they were putting together a nice drive. Wilson attempted a pass across the middle to receiver Jermaine Kearse, where the ball went off his hands right into the arms of Packers safety Morgan Burnett. This happened with 5:13 to go in the game. The possibility of a Seahawks win was improbable.
The Seahawks defense came up big with a quick three and out forcing the Packers to punt.
The Seahawks offense got right to work. Russel Wilson hit Marshawn Lynch on a big gain which put them in the red zone. Wilson finished the drive off running it in the end-zone himself. This narrowed the Packers lead to 19-14 with 2:13 remaining in regulation. The Seahawks lined up to attempt the onside kick. Seahawks kicker, Steven Hauschka, got a good jump on the ball. Packers tight end, Brandon Bostick jumped up and went for the ball, but wiffed on it and the Seahawks recovered.
The Seahawks went right down the field and scored right away on a 24-yard Marshawn Lynch touchdown with 1:33 remaining to give the Seahawks the lead. The Seahawks converted on the 2-point conversion to make it 22-19. There was still plenty of time for Aaron Rodgers to score.
With a couple of completions down the field, the Packers offense set up Mason Crosby with a 48-yd field goal to tie. Crosby knocked it home, no problem. The game was heading to overtime tied 22-22.
The Seahawks won the toss, and of course elected to receive.
Russel Wilson got to work right away. During that drive, he hit wide receiver Doug Baldwin for 35 yards to set them up on the 35-yard line. The next play, Russel Wilson hit Kearse on a deep post up the middle for a touchdown. The Seahawks were heading to the Super Bowl!
Kearse redeemed himself on that play. All of Wilson’s four interceptions were intended to Kearse, two of them arguably being his fault.
The final score ended up being 28-22. This is a loss that the Packers are going to think about for quite sometime.
The second game that day was the AFC championship game between the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots. These two teams had two MVP candidate quarterbacks running their offense this year. For Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, this was his eighth AFC championship game, and he was as well trying to advance to his sixth Super Bowl.
As for the young and promising quarterback, Andrew Luck, this is his third playoff appearance in his three-year career. Luck has advanced one round further each appearance he has made in the playoffs.
The game started out just how the Patriots wanted to. Early in the first quarter, Colts punt returner Joshua Cribbs muffed a punt that set the patriots up at the Colts 26 yard line. Patriots running back LaGarrette Blount, eventually punched in a one-yard run to give the Patriots an early 7-0 lead.
The Patriots then capitalized off a missed field goal. Tom Brady threw to Patriots full back James Develin for a one-yard touchdown pass.
The Colts would eventually strike back with a one-yard touchdown run of their own by running back Zurlon Tipton. This would be the only score the Colts had all day.
Patriots kicker, Stephen Gostkowski, added a field goal towards the end of the second quarter to give the Patriots a 17-7 halftime lead.
The Patriots would come out in the second half on fire. On their first offensive possession, they drove right down the field, and eventually hit eligible offensive lineman Nate Solder on a 16-yard touchdown reception.
After another Patriots defensive stop, their offense came back out, and Brady through another strike to big tight end Rob Gronkowski.
Lagarret Blount ran another 13-yard touchdown on the Patriots next possesion. The Patriots scored on everyone of their offensive possesions in the third quarter.
LaGarrette Blount would add another fourth quarter touchdown as the Patriots would cruise to a 45-7 victory.
Tom Brady would finish with 226 passing yards and three touchdown passes. LaGarrette Blount had a breakout day as well, rushing for 148 yards on 30 carries with three touchdowns.
Now, the Seahawks and Patriots will each get a two-week long break before they meet in the big game. This year’s Super Bowl is being held in Glendale, Arizona at The University of Phoenix Stadium, home of the Arizona Cardinals.
The Pro Bowl will be held this coming Sunday.
Seattle was originally favored by 2 1/2 points over the Patriots, but since then has been moved to a pick’em game.
These two teams match up very well together. The Patriots come in with arguably the best offense in the NFL, but the Seahawks come in with arguably the best defense in the NFL.
The Patriots can run the ball effectively, but are mainly known for throwing the ball. Brady and his receivers will be challenged with arguably the best secondary in football. LaGarrette Blount, and the rest of the Patriot running backs will need to step up for the Patriots.
The New England Patriots have one of the best run defense’s in football. They have not allowed a 100-yard rusher since the 2012 season. The Seahawk’s offense is based on running the football, lead by Marshawn Lynch; so look for Russel Wilson to have to throw the ball more in this game. Wilson will have to look out for maybe the best cornerback in football, Darrelle Revis. Seahawk’s cornerback, Richard Sherman, might disagree with that last statement.
In an exciting past weekend of football, we found out the two teams that will be playing on Super Bowl Sunday.
