The state of Oklahoma hosted the greatest folkstyle tournament in the world, The NCAA championships March 20-22. The tournament hosted some of the best wrestlers in the country to compete to become National Champions.
The Penn State Nittany Lions won their 4th straight team title under the guidance of Cael Sanderson.
The Lions finished with 109.5 points to win the title, Minnesota placed second with 104 points. The race for the NCAA title at the tournament was down to the wire, until the finals when Penn State racked up 2 wins for their top guys Ed Ruth and David Taylor.
Taylor finished his career with his second ‘Most Outstanding Wrestler’ in the tournament, his first one being in 2012.
Penn State is in 5th place for most team championship titles. Penn State has still a long way to go if they want to surpass Oklahoma State. Oklahoma State has a total of 34 team championship titles, with their last championship being in 2006. In second place for championship titles is the University of Iowa with 23 titles.
Oklahoma State, in addition to their team titles, has many individual champions as well. Oklahoma State has over 138 National Champions, the most in any wrestling program.
Hopefully, there will be some great championships in the future.
In 2015, the NCAA Championships will be held at The Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Then in 2016, Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York will host the championships.
