Bethel wrestlers held their own at the Allegheny County Wrestling Championship (ACWC) this past weekend at Fox Chapel High School. Five wrestlers of Bethel managed to battle their way onto the podium, earning “All County” honors.
At 132, Nino Bonaccorsi, freshman, took 5th place. Bonaccorsi wrestled eight matches throughout the weekend, ending with 6 wins and 2 losses.
Bonaccorsi battled back from his losses to defeat Darion Trimmer from Avonworth 3-1 in the 5th place bout. Bonaccorsi also defeated Lucas Gaydos from South Allegheny, Nick Burkett from Thomas Jefferson, William Becham from Allderdice, and Ian Moritz from Fox Chapel.
At 152 lbs., Paul Dunn, a junior, took 4th place at the tournament. Dunn made his way to the semi-finals before falling to the 2nd place finisher, Grant Fetchet.
Paul lost a tough match for 3rd place, falling to Nate Hall from West Allegheny 2-0. Paul also won against Kolten Kawaski from Thomas Jefferson, Antwuan Porter from Brashear, Corey Mahon from Fox Chapel, and Cameron Jacobson from Allderice.
At 160 lbs., Alex Gates, a senior, preformed well and finished 6th place. Gates wrestled well and managed to get into the 5th place match. Gates had a rematch in the contest wrestling Jon Cole from Central Catholic. Gates came away with the win in their last meet, but Jon Cole edged Gates in this bout.
Sam Gercak, senior, wrestled tough to get an 8th place finish at the tournament. Gercak had a good tournament defeating Michael Long from South Park, Nathan Hoff from Plum, and Maryce Johnson from West Mifflin.
Lastly at HWT, Chris Pauley, a sophomore, took 6th place at the tournament. Pauley defeated Michael Griffin from Carlynton, Adisa Branch from Central Catholic, David Probert from North Allegheny, and Michael Ames from Penn Hills.
The wrestlers of Bethel Park held their own at the tournament defeating many wrestlers from competitive teams.
