Last Friday, the 2014 World Cup Draw took place. Teams that have qualified found out their fate in which group they are to play in. For the US, they have may gotten the worst of the draw.
The US had been drawn into Group G, which consists of Germany, Portugal, and Ghana. Many are calling Group G the ‘Group of Death’.
Germany will be coming as one of the favorites to win the World Cup as well as Italy, and the reigning World Cup Champions, Spain. The Germans are loaded with talent, which gives manager Jogi Löw some flexibility when creating his lineup. Germany will play through Bastian Schweinsteiger. Schweinstegier is one of the world’s best midfielders and without a question the most versatile midfielder out there. Expect big things from Germany.
Portugal is a very good team that features arguably the world’s best player, Cristiano Ronaldo. Although Portugal has plenty of raw talent, they will do or die by the play of Ronaldo. In order to advance, they are going to need Ronaldo to have more spectacular performances like his outing against Sweden in which he had 4 goals to lead Portugal to victory and qualify for the World Cup.
The US comes in having played well in the qualifying stages. Several players have stepped up for manager Jürgen Klinsmann, including striker Eddie Johnson. Jozy Altidore has greatly improved and is on his way of becoming an elite player. The US is not as talented as Germany or Portugal, but they give those two a run for their money.
Finishing up the group is Ghana. Even though Ghana is down from past years, they won’t go down without swinging. Ghana has a knack for beating the US by knocking them out in the past two tournaments.
The ‘Group of Death’ should not lack any excitement this summer. Group G will be the life of the party in Brasil come June.
