Mike Tomlin needs to decide the right time for a rebuild of his team as he can not rely on Bill Cowher’s team any longer. They are getting old, and it is time to make some changes. The Steelers should seek trade options for Ben Roethlisberger.
Roethlisberger is valued on what he has done and what he still can do. Even though he is over 30 years old, he is still a tough guy to bring down and can extend plays.
He has won two Super Bowls and has been to three. The most important trait about him is the fact that he can win games. Although not apparent this year, Roethlisberger is near 100 wins on his career and also has a record in the playoffs of 10-4.
Roethlisberger’s market would be fairly large considering the teams that are one QB away from being contenders. Teams like the Texans and Vikings would kill for Roethlisberger right now given their QB woes this past year. Such teams would give you a pretty high offer and sometimes an offer a team cannot refuse.
The only negative characterisitc about Roethlisberger is his durability. He has had only one full season his entire career and has not had a year where he was not playing through an injury.
The thing is you can’t expect to be healthy for as many times as he gets hit. Roethlisberger has been the most hit quarterback in the NFL ever since entering the league. Some of these hits have to do with his style of play, and some have to do with him always being behind a patchwork offensive line.
The resolution is that if he gets traded, he would be behind a better offensive line and would not be hit as much as he has been. It still does not fix him playing out of his style of play, though. Roethlisberger is such a good quarterback because of his unconventional way of playing the game. It does not matter how old he is; he will always play with his unusual style because he can win games by doing this.
The Steelers are going through a transition of rebuilding, and they need to rebuild through the draft. A player like Roethlisberger would yield a lot of draft picks.
The Steelers are a declining team, but the football tradition in Pittsburgh will never die. The fans want to see winners and that will not happen with this team as they are old and just plain bad.
If the Steelers can get an offer for Roethlisberger that is not passable, why not take it? They will have many bad seasons ahead if they do not make a move and make it fast.
