The Cornell senior, Kyle Dake, ended his last college wrestling match of his lifetime on a magical note.
Dake entered the NCAA tournament in Des Moines, Iowa as a No. 1 seed and undefeated at 32-0. He also arrived with a lot of hype, being a 3X National Champion at 3 different weight classes. Another title would put him on his own page in the history books.
In Des Moines, Dake slid by his competition until he approached the finals match where he took on his long time friend of Penn State University, David Taylor. Taylor was a National Champion at the 165-pound weight class last year and was also a runner-up two years ago. Even though Dake defeated Taylor twice earlier this season, he was hungry and ready to defend his title from last year and also accomplish the impossible.
The NCAA decided to place their match as the last finals match of the evening because they considered it the main event. The match began and out of nowhere Taylor got a suprising first takedown to put him in the lead. After that takedown, Dake realized that it was time to get serious. He dominated the 2nd and 3rd periods and came out with a close 5-4 decision over Taylor.
After that victory, Dake became a 4X National Champion, joining an elite group of only two others who have accomplished that goal, Cael Sanderson of Iowa State and Pat Smith of Oklahoma State. But Dake was the only one to win four National Championships at four different weight classes. That is one of the biggest accomplishments college wrestling has ever seen.
Dake also recieved the Hodge Trophy after his victory. He gathered 41 of 43 first place votes from the Hodge committee. Recently, he was also named the Intermat Wrestler of the Year.
College wrestling may not see anything like this for years, and that is why Kyle Dake may be considered one of the best wrestlers to ever walk this Earth.
