Seniors learn the importance of safe driving
On Monday, Oct. 20, the senior class was invited to an assembly 4th period to learn about the importance of safe driving.
KDKA’s Sarah Arbogast began the assembly by introducing the Ford Driving Skills for Life program. She then introduced representatives from the Pennsylvania State Police, Ford, Westfield Insurance, and the Allegheny County Pretrial Services. Each speaker took a few minutes to discuss different aspects involved in staying safe on the road such as texting and driving, wearing seat belts, and making sure one’s car is always safe to drive.
The Pennsylvania State Trooper told students, “Halloween is the day with the most car accidents each year.”
So as Halloween quickly approaches, take into account that children will be difficult to see in the dark, so please take precautionary measures and drive slowly.
After the guest speakers, students watched a short video about how to handle certain road situations, and how to appropriately act when driving a car. The video also showed a mock crash to display how frightening accidents can be. At the end, the speakers were open for questions and many students had the opportunity to ask about something they had questioned before.
As they were leaving the cafeteria, the seniors were given a gift bag with information about safe driving, as well as a few fun items like sunglasses.
The assembly was extremely informative and made you realize how quickly your life can change by doing just one thing wrong while driving. It was apparent that almost everyone learned something, or had an eye-opening experience that will hopefully make them think the next time they get behind the wheel.
