Many AP students are currently registering for the AP Exams, which are scheduled to begin in May.
BPHS currently offers 17 AP classes across the curriculum.
Many students always ask why they should take an AP course. They are definitely a bit more challenging and one must put in more work than any other class.
But Mr. Youngs, an AP English teacher, said every student should take an AP course. He said there are two main reasons why someone should.
First, the challenge is rewarding in itself. Working hard and getting a good grade on something makes the feeling of accomplishment even greater.
Second, colleges look for students that take vigorous classes and work hard compared to other honors or regular classes the students might take.
Mr. Youngs said, “In other words, a ‘B’ in an AP class may be seen as better than an ‘A’ in a regular high school course.”
This is so because AP classes provide the same intensity one will experience in college.
Amy Bogan, a junior, has taken multiple AP classes, including AP European History and AP Chemistry.
Bogan recommends for her fellow students to take AP classes. She said, “They aren’t much harder than honors or regular classes. You just have to try and do your homework.”
Bogan says that it was definitely worth the challenge. She said, “It was worth it because now I have a background in the classes for college.”
Caitlin Zeher, a junior, also takes multiple AP classes, including AP Calculus AB, AP Chemistry, AP English 11, and AP Statistics.
Zeher took these classes for one big reason. She said, “I took these so that I could challenge myself and feel like that I am capable of the advanced college course.”
Even though Zeher said one must put more effort into AP classes, it is all worth it in the end.
In addition to benefitting academics, AP classes are easier on the pocketbook in the long run.
“You may also save money and be able to take more electives in college, if your scores on the AP exam qualify you for credit at a university,” Mr. Youngs said.
With the decrease in money, many colleges may be in reach for a student’s budget.
