Wanting to get rid of your old cans or just help your community? Then, drop off your cans in Mr. Galietta’s room, Room A408. Francesca Galietta, a sophomore, is going to donate these cans to SHIM.
Galietta started this food drive with the desire to use this as her National Honors Society Leadership project for her application. She also wanted a chance to give something back to her community.
For food drives, one of the many questions that must be answered before starting is where the collected cans will go.
Galietta decided that she would donate all of the cans to SHIM. One of the reasons she chose this was because her neighbor works there. She said, “I wanted to let my neighbor know that I appreciate everything she has done.”
Galietta also participated in the 2012 SHIM Shuffle and wanted to continue to support them.
She has a goal of collecting 1,000 cans for this organization. Right now, she has already passed the halfway point and is over 600.
Galietta encourages others to start food drives. She said, “It wasn’t hard to start the food drive, the hard part is collecting the cans.”
She has spent most of her free time getting cans from her neighbors, giving out flyers, and talking to classmates and friends.
Just talking to her neighbors and giving out flyers gave her 200 cans alone. She said, “I got a wonderful response!”
Through this experience, Galietta’s eyes were opened to how something small like this can affect the community in a positive way.
She definitely plans to do something like this again in the future. She said, “This project has shown me how much of a difference one person can make in someone’s life.”
So donate your cans before February 26th and help change the community one can at a time.
You can make a difference!
