When one signs up for an Honors level English course, he or she is required to read a certain number of books over the summer in order to get a jump start on the school year. This often is the reason many students choose to stray away from these courses, but those who accept the challenge now have the opportunity to access the books with more ease.
English Department Director Mr. Youngs commented on the importance of summer reading saying that “Research shows that if students aren’t frequently reading or exercising their brains, they can lose a significant amount of learning or knowledge they previously had.”
Besides being able to check out the books from the school library or Mr. Youngs’s classroom, a student can now attend a special book fair that is going to be held at the South Hills Village Barnes & Noble on Saturday, June 22nd.
So how does the book fair relate to summer reading?
If a student or citizen mentions “BPHS Book Fair” at the register when they purchase a summer reading book or any piece of literature, then part of the proceeds will be donated directly to the English Department, which can then be used to fund field trips, guest speakers, and other special events. This also allows the English Department to have a class copy of books for those students who cannot purchase them.
If one is not able to attend the book fair on June 22nd, opportunities are given for students and others to shop online at BN.com using Book Fair ID #: 11124088; proceeds will also be used towards the English Department
However, books and music are the only items that apply to the book fair. Starbucks, video games, board games, magazines, and other similar items are still for sale but will not be accounted into the Book Fair proceeds.
Students are encouraged to attend the Book Fair and help out their community.
In fact, Barnes and Nobles is a significant advocate of school fundraising as they offer any school in its area the opportunity to conduct two fundraisers through the Bookstore per year.
