Every year on Feb. 2, millions worldwide watch as Punxsutawney Phil, the legendary groundhog of Pennsylvania, makes his annual forecast.
According to tradition, if Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter; if not, spring will arrive early.
2026’s iteration continued this longstanding custom, with this year marking Phil’s 140th time predicting the season.
It is said that the 140-year-old allegedly drinks a magical brew that is believed to give him life each year that only he can drink.
Nevertheless, many gathered at Gobbler’s Knob in anticipation of the reveal.
The event, organized by the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, saw the famous groundhog emerge from his burrow at 7:25 a.m.
Phil’s handlers translated his “groundhogese” from the official scroll, including Tom Dunkel, the father-in-law of BPHS English teacher Mr. Travis.
However, to the disappointment of most, Phil would go on to see his shadow, thereby announcing that there would be six more weeks of winter.
Although this isn’t certain, since Phil has been wrong 35% of the time over the years, with 2024 being the last time he was correct.
Despite scientific evidence suggesting that his forecasts are not reliable, many view this more as a fun tradition than a fact.
Whether winter drags on or gives way to spring, the anticipation surrounding Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction continues to excite people every year.
