In recent news, our FCCLA club competed and won awards at the State Leadership Conference held at the Seven Springs Ski Resort.
FCCLA stands for Family, Career, and Community leaders of America, Inc. This is a non-profit student organization. The FCCLA is open to anyone in grade school and high school, public or private.
Aside from competing, these girls participate in a lot of volunteer work around the Pittsburgh area.
Sara Amato, one of four National Qualifiers from BPHS, competed in The Recycle and Redesign event. In this event, she took first place out of the three girls she competed against in her age group.
According to the FCCLA Website: The Recycle and Redesign event is an “individual event that recognizes participants who apply recycling and redesign skills learned in Family and Consumer Sciences courses and create a display using a sample of their skills. Participants select a used fashion, home, or other post-consumer item to recycle into a new product. Participants create a brand new product, not simply embellish an old one.”
There are many different events that anyone can compete in; there is no age limit on any event. The FCCLA members are graded by a rubric which judges you on planning, materials, cost, time, storyboard, display, organization, knowledge, voice, and body language.
The FCCLA is a year-round club and its members are very interactive with their peers and society; if you are not already involved, consider joining next year.
