“I love to read, sing, and act, but I just wish there was a club where I could do all three! ” said junior Haley Radcliffe.
Well now there is thanks to English teacher, Mr. Nagel!
“I was approached by some elementary school teachers with the idea to form this club. It’s a positive environment for the kids that makes reading fun,” said Mr. Nagel.
The club meets after school to discuss ideas and rehearse plays that will be performed for elementary students by the club members. This is a great opportunity for high school students to get involved and give back to the community simply by passing on the importance of reading.
“The purpose of this group is to create a healthy habit of reading,” said Mr. Nagel.
The club takes popular songs such as “Ghostbusters” and makes them about reading like “Book Busters.” This helps the elementary students become more intrigued in the idea of reading as well as shedding a brighter light on the fun of it.
The Feed the Need to Read Club puts together and demonstrates 45-minute assemblies to the elementary schools and includes fun activities such as comedy sketches, plays, singing and dancing that get the kids up and moving around.
It is important to teach younger students to start reading more often and find adventure in it as reading improves one’s comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills (even more so the younger he or she starts).
