Fisherman all across the state of PA have been waiting months to finally toss their lines in the water, sit back, relax, and enjoy a glorious opening day of trout fishing. Every April 13th marks the opening day for arguably the most enjoyable fish to fish for, trout. Usually a week before opening day, the game commission travels to local streams and lakes to stock them with large amounts of trout for fisherman around the community.
A huge concern for most fisherman on opening day is the aggravation of fishing at a crowded spot. Most of the larger lakes in Allegheny County are bombarded with people of all ages posted up around every square inch of the perimeter of the lake. Some people prefer fishing in canoes to be able to cast anywhere in the surrounding area. They tend to get in the way of the fisherman that fish outside of the water .
After opening day, most spots start to get over-fished and it becomes hard to catch anything because of the major decrease of the number of fish. That’s why it is a good idea to get to a nice spot early in the morning to catch as many fish as possible.
The different species of trout that you will find around here include the rainbow trout, the brown trout, the lake trout, the golden rainbow trout, and the steelhead trout.
Some types of trout bait that are quite effective include powerbait, night crawlers, and salmon eggs. Lours and spinners always get the job done also.
The state record for the largest trout is held by the one and only Fazle Buljubasic. In July of 2000, Fazle landed a giant 19 lb. 10 oz. brown trout at Walnut Creek in Erie, PA. Fisherman in PA have been competing to try and show up Fazle, but they have not been able to break his outstanding record in 13 years.
One of the most important things to do before you even step within a 100 ft. radius of a body of water is get a fishing license. The game commission has been cracking down on people for not having trout licenses recently and you do not want to be one of them. The lightest punishment you can get without having a license on you is a $250 fine. So remember to go out and buy a license for $35 dollars at a local Walmart near you.
Slamming fat fish is one of the most entertaining things you can do during the day. So get up, stop wasting your time, and do some fishin!
