Artist of the Week: Lecrae
Lecrae is an American rapper, songwriter, and record producer, who moved around a lot as a child.
Lecrae’s childhood wasn’t easy. He never met his father and was raised by his single mother. Since his mother wasn’t home much, he spent much time with his relatives, who didn’t give him the best home life.
As a result, Lecrae got in much trouble as a child and was even put on a gang list. He had problems with drugs and alcohol but eventually felt inside that he needed to change.
Lecrae attended a conference meeting in which he was invited by his friend. He was in awe of a Christian hip-hop group that performed called The Cross Movement. A pastor spoke as well and talked about the importance of Christ.
Lecrae was good at rapping as a child. It was something he found interest in. He wasn’t that great in sports, and was an average student, so rapping was a way he felt he could give back.
Lecrae started his career in 2004, the year in which he released his first album. It was a good album that had success, which put Lecrae on the map. He co-founded ReachLife Ministries in 2005 which is a non-profit organization that equips local Christian leaders with tools, media, curriculum, and conferences that are based on the teachings of the bible and relevant to hip-hop culture.
Lecrae has released seven albums throughout his career, but his most famous was the last one he released called Anomaly. This album was #1 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart, as well as several other Billboard charts including Digital Album, Rap Album, Christian Album, and Gospel Album. Lecrae was only the fifth artist to have a #1 album on both Christian Albums and the Billboard 200.
Lecrae still has much more in store for us in the future.
