Junior student, Kayla Veith, was nominated for this week’s “Athlete of the Week,” for her outstanding tennis skills. Congrats Kayla!

Kayla is an active student that participates in multiple clubs that the high school has to offer. She is in SGA (Student Government Association), S.T.A.N.D., and is on the Homecoming Committee.

Not only is Kayla involved in clubs, but sports as well. Kayla is on both the track and tennis team. She was recognized this week for her superb tennis playing.

“I have been playing tennis since fifth grade.”

Kayla currently plays second singles for varsity.

“My most memorable moment of playing tennis for the high school would have to be winning this match against West Allegheny. She (her opponent) was super fast like me and it was hard to get the ball, but I ended up beating her. It was tough though.”

“Oh and this one time some random man came up to me at a match and asked me for my name and grade. I thought I was going to get a scholarship…still waiting for it though….(laughing).

Kayla plans on going to Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania, but she is not set on a major yet.

When asked if she planned on continuing to play competitive tennis in college, Kayla said, “Yeah I plan to…but you know…somtimes other plans get in the way. You feel me?”

Although Kayla is not one hundred percent sure about her tennis career in college, she tells Hawk Eye that she does plan on playing throughout the rest of her life.

“I mean, I see older people play all the time. If they can, why can’t I?”

Her quote that she wanted to pass on to people who just started the sport of tennis is, “Hit the ball, because it’s coming ‘attcha bud.”

Kayla and her fellow junior student, Matt Orsini, both picked an inspirational quote that they believe truly stands out.

“One day, you will wake up and there won’t be any more time to do the things you’ve always wanted. Do it now.” -Paulo Coelho

Whether you see Kayla running on the track field, or smacking some tennis balls around on the tennis courts, make sure you say hi to this week’s “Athlete of the Week.”
