The boys varsity basketball team did something that hasn’t been done for 33 years.
They advanced to the Elite 8 of the PIAA playoffs with a 48-43 win over Fox Chapel Tuesday night.
The Hawks lost to Fox Chapel for fifth place in the WPIAL just two weeks before, so this win was even sweeter.
The Foxes led 20-13 at the half, but the Hawks’ stingy defense and fluid offense flipped the script in the third quarter outscoring their opponent 18-4 and giving them the 31-24 lead.
“At halftime, I told them to just keep playing with enthusiasm and energy. We are going to make a couple and if we don’t, we’re going to still play as hard as we can. They really took it over there in the third quarter,” Coach Calabria said. (Eleanor Bailey, The Almanac)
In the third, Nick Brown scored six points and Shawn Davis scored five.
Others contributing to the win included Tanner Pfeuffer, Jack and Mike Bruckner, and Mike Mathias.
Brown finished with 16 points and Davis with 12.
The Hawks match up with WPIAL champions Moon on Friday, March 15 at 7 p.m. at Chartiers Valley High School.
Though on paper Moon is the favorite, the Hawks look to carry their momentum into the game and pull off the upset.
