Hawks score 34 points in second-half resurgence against Moon

It looked like the Black Hawks and Tigers were playing out the script for a movie when they butted heads Friday night at Moon Area High School.

The first half painted a daunting picture as the Hawks found themselves trailing 28-0, indicating a potential one-sided victory in favor of the Moon Tigers. However, the Hawks were able to put together what would resemble an archetypal comeback story in the second frame.

“We as coaches didn’t put them in the best position to succeed in the first half,” Bethel Park coach Phil Peckich said. “You can’t give a quality team a free half, and we put the team in a better position that second half.” (Sean Saputo, Tribune-Review).

The Hawks’ resurgence commenced with a touchdown by Ryan Petras, who made a 3-yard reception from Tanner Pfeuffer. This was promptly followed by an 8-yard touchdown pass from Pfeuffer to Jovian Smith. Petras found the end zone once more, this time with a 6-yard rushing touchdown.

Moon responded shortly after Petras’ second touchdown, but the Black Hawks scored two more quick touchdowns to make it 35-34.

Jack Bruckner scored on a 54-yard catch, which was followed by another Petras touchdown, a 3-yard run.

After this storybook drive from the Hawks, Moon flipped the script and scored with just 2:55 left in the game. This would prove to be the nail in the coffin for the Hawks, as they were unable to stage a last-minute rally.

Bethel Park (3-5, 2-1) hosts South Fayette next Friday for another section contest.
