Two weeks ago, Cami Fisher and Lily Sierka paired up to compete in section doubles.  In that short time, they won a section title and most recently a WPIAL title. They made history in the process.

The duo was the first in Bethel Park history to win a WPIAL title. For 51 years, since 1973, the WPIAL has been crowning WPIAL champions in girls tennis.

“They are very good friends and communicate well,” Coach Doug Addington said. “They get along well and play well together. They can pretty much do everything. Play the volley game or the net game.” (Eleanor Bailey, The Almanac).

The No. 2-seeded Fisher and Sierka played No. 1-seeded Shady Side Academy’s Elana Sobol and Rachel Nath in the finals at North Allegheny High School on Oct. 5.

In the initial set, Fisher and Sierka competed closely with Sobol and Nath, consistently tying the score at 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, and 6-6 before ultimately securing a win during the 7-point tiebreaker. Sierka and Fisher took an early lead by scoring the first four points and won the tiebreaker 7-3 giving them the 7-6 victory.

“No matter what happened, we just kept a positive attitude,” Sierka said. “We stayed consistent and positive.

“The second we would doubt ourself, the other one would say something like ‘you got this. You’re good.’ It wasn’t just playing well, it was also staying positive.” (Eleanor Bailey, The Almanac).

The Bethel team went on to handily win the second set, 6-2.

With the unprecedented win, Fisher and Sierka advance to the PIAA doubles tournament, which will be played at the Hershey Racket Club in Hershey, Pa. come November.
